The Transfiguration was, obviously, of great importance for the first Christians. We’ve been talking about how the early Church related it to the Akeda so let’s take a deeper
St John, The EVANGELIST
I Rejoiced When I heard them Say, Let us go to God's House
Dear Friends in Christ,
The Church of St John's was established way back in 1883 and was just a simple long wooden hall with a few windows built on a forested area of Bukit Nanas.
The foundation stone for a new church building of brick structure was laid on 28 March, 1954. In 1962, this church was consecrated and its status elevated to that of a Cathedral with Fr Edward Limat as the first Vicar General and Parish Priest.
The interior then saw many significant changes to enhance the church building. An interesting inscription in mosaic chips at the new altar reads: ECCE AGNUS DEI (Behold the Lamb of God). The stained glass from Paris depicting the three gospel scenes in which, the patron of the church St John appears, provide the backdrop to the altar.
The building now designated as heritage has an amazing mixture of architectural styles and bears witness to the many centuries of its life; first as an ordinary church and now as a Cathedral. Down the centuries, countless pilgrims have come to worship and offer prayers - and they still come in their thousands today. This website gives you a glimpse of the Cathedral's busy life especially on weekends receiving many different nationalities apart from Malaysians gathering to worship as one community.
We warmly welcome you at the Cathedral just as Abraham did when the three strangers appeared at his doorstep. Each stranger must be treated as Christ himself, and we try to keep the tradition of hospitality alive. We await your presence. Called To Serve .................. Msgr James Gnana and Fr William Michael
